JOB TITLE:
Director of Operations
JOB ROLE:
Currently most of my time is spent on the people aspects of the business – making sure we have the right number of people, with the right skills in the right locations, in order to deliver the solution to our customers. I work with the Delivery Management team and the HR team to oversee the recruitment, training, retention, pay scales, career progression, appraisal system, promotion process, talent management and morale of the people in Kainos.
I also have responsibility for internal communication, as well as travel and administration.

BSc. Hons Computer Science, QUB
Masters in Business Administration (MBA), Ulster Business School
WORK EXPERIENCE:
After graduating in 1986, I worked in London for less than 1 year. I joined Kainos in 1987, as a graduate software engineer just as it was starting. In the early years of my career in Kainos, I undertook all the software engineering work of requirements, design, coding, and testing. Over the years I have also had a number of management roles, including Quality Manager, Project Manager, IT Manager, and Property Manager – usually with multiple roles at the same time. I took over responsibility for HR in 2002.
SKILLS REQUIRED FOR THE JOB:
- Understand the IT solutions business, particularly the different roles and skills, and what motivates the people
- Understand the wider Kainos business, particularly how the right people can drive the utilisation, revenue and profit for the company
- Strong communication skills – both written and verbal
- Ability to develop relationships across all levels in the company
- Strong influencing skills
- Ability to give both positive and negative feedback
- Flexibility in style of management to get the best out of different people
