More About Me
COMPANY: BT
JOB TITLE: Head of Corporate Social Responsibility
As head of Corporate Social Responsibility and Age & Disability Research Programmes, I’m responsible for BT’s research into new technologies to help the three strands of BT’s CSR strategy; tackling climate change, sustainable economic growth and creating a more inclusive society. I have a keen interest in the inclusive design of our products and am at the forefront of BT’s drive for accessible products for all our customers. The role involves working with colleagues across BT and external organisations, to convert BT’s innovation into inspiration.
RELATED DEGREE:
- HND in Computing Studies from Newcastle Polytechnic
WORK EXPERIENCE:
During my 3 year HND I spent my middle year in industry and that was with BT in their computing base where I did 4 separate 3 month placements in the computing departments. This importantly got me to know people, despite a recruitment ban within BT when I graduated I secured a position as the youngest manager in the North East. I worked on system design, programming, user services.
Ten years ago I was promoted to the EA (Executive Assistant) to the Director of Computing to be based in London. This gave me a wide understanding of BT and greater exposure. When Gordon Channon, the Director moved on after 2 years, Sinclair Stockman took over and he was a wonderful mentor on enabling people to thrive. I then worked on flexible technology for BT people and one of those was bringing in the BlackBerry into BT, in fact we were the first company to take the BlackBerry outside of the United States and I was privileged to be one of the first ten people outside of the States to have one. Being able to spend one to one time with senior people enabled even greater exposure and I talked at many conferences world wide on flexible working and BT’s transformation.
During this time I met some vision impaired students and started to spend money on innovation for inclusion, this is my current work focus and it’s such a pleasure to lead research that helps corporate responsibility.
I also spend time mentoring some of the youngest talent in BT, particularly the Apprentices and some Graduates, this enables the next generation of talent to be discovered and thrive. I have worked for BT for twenty years and loved every year of it, it’s a great place with people who want to make a difference.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
Management, presenting a story, mentoring, inspiring, video work, inclusive research, talking your way out of a situation!
BENEFITS OF THE JOB:
Well I have the best job in BT because I work with the best people, imagine being excited going to work and proud of people every day.
CAREER GOALS:
To continue to be in a role where I can create the perfect role and help people thrive.
