Company Profile

About CPW Networks

This wholly-owned division of The Carphone Warehouse Group plc is one of the UK’s largest telecoms network operators, and a Next Generation Network leader, they are always on the lookout for the next big thing.

The Carphone Warehouse Networks brand was launched in 2007, but their history goes all the way back to 1995, when Opal Telecommunications first started trading. The Carphone Warehouse Group acquired Opal in 2002, for a highly efficient telecoms network to provide the platform to push into the residential telephony market.

From the outset, they have focused on developing advanced telecom services software, with products such as interactive voice response, billing and internet computer platforms. The company delivers and maintains the networks for various providers, including TalkTalk, AOL Broadband and Opal.

First to market

Carphone Warehouse always strives to break new ground in the telecoms market, and to provide their customers with value-added products and services.

They were the first UK carrier to offer a network-based Telephone Preference Service screening service; first to host a network-based bulk call recording product and the first company to offer a network-based predictive dialler on a pay-as-you-go basis.

It is partly through innovations such as these that the company has been able to grow consistently over the course of the last decade. Eleven years ago, they had one million minutes per month running through their network. Today, they have over two billion.

The telecoms network is the only large scale all IP network in the UK, meaning that voice and data traffic is carried over a single infrastructure, making them both cost efficient and allowing for the development of new value-added services over time.

Today the Group has over 4m customer lines across the TalkTalk, AOL Broadband and Opal brands including 2.8m broadband customers, which represents approximately 17% share of the UK market. This makes CPW the third largest broadband supplier in the UK.

To support the companies growth and invest in the talent of the future Networks have launched a diploma programme in conjunction with Irlam and Cadishead Community High School 6th Form. The 2 year diploma combines class-room learning with practical experience to help develop the transferable skills that universities and employers demand in today’s competitive and fast-paced economy. Students gain BTEC qualifications (level 3) in IT for Practitioners and Customer Services, and come away at the end of the course with a better idea of whether a career in the world of telecoms is of interest.
