Company Profile

Staff at BA reveal all about how creativity in the workplace can really benefit business and the transport services we all take for granted.

In-flight news…

BA is the national airline for the UK and one of the largest in Europe. Based at Heathrow and Gatwick in London, its planes fly to over 300 destinations.

BA launched the world’s first supersonic passenger service, Concorde, simultaneously with Air France in January 1976 and retired it in 2003.

They are also one of the leading cargo airlines in the world, carrying freight, mail and courier traffic.

Key facts

  • Heathrow Terminal 5 was built exclusively for the use of British Airways at a cost of £4.3 billion.
  • British Airways is the UK’s national carrier, carrying 33 million passengers annually.
  • The British Airways fleet comprises 245 aircraft with orders for the new A380 “Superjumbo” and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
  • British Airways is the official airline and tier 1 partner of the London 2012 Olympics.

What BA says…

“You would have to search long and hard to find a part of British Airways that doesn’t rely on IT. From efficient sales and reservations services to electronic ticketing initiatives, from systems that plan the optimum use of fuel to devising the latest in in-flight entertainment, we are busy creating competitive advantage for British Airways and our global alliance partners.

IT is crucial to the airline’s operation; whether it’s tracking a bag or ordering a spare part for an aircraft on the other side of the world. This places BA’s Information Management team right at the centre of our business, which is where we like to work. It also means the 1600 IT professionals who work here have the potential to exert an enormous influence on the airline’s performance.

Within British Airways, the Information Management team is responsible for creating the airline’s IT strategy and delivering the supporting IT products and services. Our objectives are to deliver a secure, robust and reliable worldwide IT operation 24×7 at a reducing cost, to deliver IT projects to time, budget and specification, with year-on-year productivity improvements, and to simplify BA’s processes by delivering efficient IT solutions hand-in-hand with business changes”.
