Choosing your next mobile is a tricky business when you might be stuck with it for 12 months…

Android powered mobile!

T-Mobile is launching G1, the first phone to use Google’s Android software and no doubt it will go head to head with iPhone and BlackBerry in the mobile popularity stakes. In this instance, Android does not refer to a robot designed to resemble a human, but to a software platform and operating system for mobile devices! The Android platform is open and free and will allow 3rd parties to write applications that serve our needs and advances in technology.

The G1 boasts a 320 × 480 touch screen and hidden Qwerty keyboard. It comes with (by now fairly standard) Wi-Fi and 3G. It also has a track for thumb-based navigation. There are built in internet applications and access to 1000s of applications via the Android Marketplace. So as you’re sauntering down the street and approach a junction, not sure where to go, you can use Google maps to get a virtual 360 degree view. Turn the phone left and the view on the screen shifts too.

Apple iPhone 3G

So what does the iPhone 3G bring us that we haven’t seen in its sleek, graceful, plastic shell that the simple old iPhone didn’t deliver?

You can talk and surf the internet simultaneously. This is great for planning your social life – you can check out what’s happening on the internet and discuss it with your mates at the same time.

The new iPhone reportedly has better audio quality so conversations should be crystal clear. A flush headphone jack means you can plug in any headphones which should make a massive difference to sound quality. GPS also means you’ll never get lost.

A 4-function calculator turns into a scientific calculator when you rotate it 90 degrees so handy for those Maths and Computer Science classes! Note the software improvements are part of a new software upgrade called iPhone 2.0.

It has just won ‘Gadget of the Year’ at The Stuff Gadget Awards held at the Dorchester Hotel in September 2008.

BlackBerry Bold 900

BlackBerry is hailed by some as a daring step into the world of all-in-one super-phones. It has a full Qwerty keypad and widescreen and also features HSDPA, Wi-Fi and GPS.

It has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack so you can use your own headphones for improved sound quality.

Setting up email is straightforward. You can also use BlackBerry Internet service to setup email accounts.

Samsung i8510

This smartphone’s star feature is an 8-megapixel camera with automatic lens cover. It has a great panorama mode with auto focus. Facial recognition and smile recognition features mean it automatically takes a picture when someone smiles. As an added extra, it can even shoot slow motion video!

Like the others it also has HSDPA and Wi-Fi.
