The credit crunch means less money to spend out and about so more nights in with our favourite games consoles…

Munch Bunch to credit crunch

We all have to keep an eye on the pennies at the moment. With less money to spare on entertainment outside the home it’s time to look at what is already rigged up in our living rooms, especially as the nights are drawing in and the winter after the summer we never had is almost upon us.

This is where the convoy of games consoles available does us proud; something for everyone. Most of us will either own or be able to lay our hands on one of the systems out there – Nintendo Wii, Play Station 3 or Xbox 360.

Their popularity shows no sign of stalling or slowing down and once you’ve got it set up in prime ‘parent frustrating’ position in the middle of the living room you can have hours of fun without spending more dosh.

Why the Wii?

The Nintendo Wii became the fastest selling games console in UK history within 38 weeks of going on sale. This was 11 weeks faster than the PlayStation 2 and 22 weeks quicker than Xbox 360, according to Chart Track, an independent sales tracking company for the gaming industry.

So, where will motion-sensitive computer gaming take us next? Perhaps a full body outfit where every part of the suit responds to movement; or a face mask that reacts to your innermost moods as you scuffle with your younger brother for use of the internet; try and hold a serious discussion with your best mate on your iPhone about GTA IV strategy; listen to 50 Cent on your MP3 player, and negotiate staying out later on Saturday night with your mother. After all, teenagers are nothing if not reasonable.

Digital Domino’s?

What did everyone do in the days before hi-tech games wizardry? Talk to one another? Sit around the dinner table and expound the importance of ‘a family who eats together, stays together’? Unlikely. In fact, all these dual action games and multi function technologies mean you are more likely to interact with friends, whether it is pitting your wits against each other on the latest Xbox game or messaging one another on Bebo or Facebook.

So, do not fear. The credit crunch may be here but we can stay inside, keep our hands off our cash and sit this one out. All we need is digital pizza. For now, Domino’s will have to do!
