    Degree description:

    This exciting new course gives students the opportunity to kick-start their career in the software industry. No matter what their degree subject, the Software Professional course will give them all they need to know to begin work as a software professional for one of Northern Ireland’s many software companies.

    This year’s course started in September 2008 and lasts 35 weeks. It is an intensive programme of study which will introduce students to the fundamentals of computer systems and software development. At the end of the course students will know about:
    • the design of complex IT systems, from web technology to mainframe systems,
    • how to build databases,
    • convert business requirements into software programmes, and
    • how software professionals project manage and quality assure their software development projects.

    On completion of the course, students will be awarded the Edexcel Level 5 Diploma in Professional Software Development; a brand new accredited qualification that has been built around the Software Professional Course Curriculum.

You will also develop key/functional skills in Number, Information Technology and Communication.

    You can progress to:
    • Level 3 iPRO qualifications in Systems Support
    • Other IT qualifications such as Applied ICT or Microsoft Certified Professional
    • An IT career, for example as an IT Technician.

    Degree description:

    The BTEC National Diploma for IT Practitioners in Software Development is a qualification designed to provide learners with a range of specialist work-related skills as well as providing them with a pathway into higher education. The course is a full time two year program, comprising of core and specialist modules. Learners are given the opportunity to develop their skills and understanding through practical and theoretical activities.

    During the lifetime of the course you are continuously assessed and graded through a range of set assignments. On successful completion of the BTEC National Diploma in Software Development, you will have achieved a Level 3 qualification equating to three GCSE A Levels.

    This is a six unit qualification which is designed to provide you with the initial knowledge, understanding and practical skills required by the IT industry. If you are interested in working with computers, whether it is programming, installation or designing websites, then this course will give you the building blocks.

    On successful completion of this course you can progress to BTEC National Diploma in Software Development and then to Degree Level study – or you can gain employment within the wider computer industry.
