Computer Engineering
Computer Engineering degrees focus more on the nuts and bolts of computing and focus on the creation of ‘big’ systems rather than small packages. They are ideal for someone with an interest in computers, systems and software but with a passion for the more technical ‘big picture’ side of IT.
With a degree under the Computer Engineering family, you could find yourself in a job providing hardware support to a business or organisation. These types of degrees largely introduce you to the theory and practice of both computer science and electronics so that you will be able to integrate software and hardware to solve technical problems in computing. You could find yourself learning how to program operating systems, networks, graphical interfaces and to design digital integrated circuits. More often than not, these types of courses focus on electronics and science, the physical creation of computer systems.
Some courses may feature hands on lab work to provide you with experience building PCs or configurating operating systems. Many courses will also include units on software engineering as well, essentially how to program applications such as media players or design packages.
