Belfast Metropolitan College is one of the largest Further and Higher Education Colleges in the United Kingdom with over 49,000 full-time and part-time enrolments.

The College offers local, national and international students the opportunity to select from a comprehensive programme of both full-time and part-time courses in a wide variety of disciplines. In addition to this, Belfast Met provides a full range of adult education courses in its buildings across Belfast, including around 100 outcentres.

Belfast Met has six main buildings located in Belfast City i.e. Millfield, College Square East, Brunswick Street, Whiterock, Tower Street and Castlereagh and each of these are easily accessed by public transport.

All of the College’s buildings provide state-of-the-art learning and teaching facilities. Where students study will depend on the programme they have chosen and all students have access to the wide variety of services and facilities available within each building.

There is a wide range of support available to our students which include: Guidance and Counselling, Careers Guidance, Disability Services, Student Finance Support, Childcare and Crèche provisions and Learning Resource Centres.

Foundation Degree In iMedia 

Course Overview 

The Foundation Degree in iMedia (FdiM) has an academic currency in its own right as well as increasing opportunities for progression to study at higher levels, in particular to the BSc (Hons) Interactive Multimedia Design (completing the honours programme in two further years of study) at the University of Ulster, Jordanstown.

The FdiM qualification includes employer involvement with the curriculum development and delivery to ensure that the skills students acquire meet industry needs. Career opportunities are also available. Achieving this qualification in an expanding and evolving market includes working in the established fields of graphic and web design, video and audio production, motion graphics, animation, multimedia authoring and multimedia project management. 

Multimedia technologies and techniques are now part of mainstream business, for example through interactive web sites, e-commerce, promotional videos, etc. The Foundation Degree in iMedia consists of a number of units covering the areas of creativity and design in this field: the implementation of multimedia systems, the use of the Internet and Website management and the design and implementation of multimedia systems, including the use of sound, animation and video. The course will be delivered in a modular format over two semesters per year and includes a work placement component during the last semester.

EDEXCEL BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Interactive Media (QCF)

The Edexcel BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Interactive Media is a qualification recognised as a flagship standard within the industry. The 16 units delivered within the course offer the breadth and specialisation required for todays interactive media workforce. 

Tutors who have external links to the industry and extensive teaching experience in interactive media courses will deliver an understanding of the essential theory and practical skills associated with modern interactive media. The course facilitates full time study and is a nationally recognised providing preparation for employment or access to further study. 

This course puts the students at the centre and is designed specially to address the needs of students, employers and professional bodies.

Foundation Degree In Software Engineering

There is currently a significant lack of qualified software engineers in the local software industry. The Foundation Degree in Software Engineering (FDSE) provides a fantastic opportunity to gain entry into this exciting and well-paid industry. TheFDSE has an extremely dedicated course team containing lecturers with significant recent Software Industry experience and consequently the course is focused on providing you with the up-to-date and cutting edge skills to make you highly employable orable to progress onto other Software Engineering courses. The course is designed in conjunction with the University of Ulster and our industry partners to provide an academically stimulating, relevant and challenging course content. Many assessments in the course are based on actual industry problems and there will be many opportunities to meet software professionals with regular industrial visits and guest speakers.In the second year the FDSE provides an industrial work placement in the local software development industry or with international companies, with several students last year being placed with companies in Holland. Last year 100% of the students successfully completing the FDSE either progressed onto University Software Engineering Honours Degree programmes or directly into employment.

EDEXCEL BTEC level 4 HNC Diploma in Computing and Systems Development

The BTEC Higher National Certificate in Computing has been developed to provide education and training in Computing and to allow students to obtain a nationally recognised vocational qualification. It will allow students to enter employment in Computing (or progress to a higher education qualification), to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in Computing and to focus on higher level skills in Computing. Learners will be provided with a full range of skills and techniques including programming and knowledge of computer systems which are essential to successful performance in working life.

EDEXCEL BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Computing and Systems Development (QCF)

This 16 unit Edexcel BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma course supports the STEM initiative (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and is delivered and assessed over two years while studying full time. The qualification introduces a nationally recognised credit framework through QCF. 
The course provides a specialist and work-related qualification and prepares students for employment or access to further study. It is based on the needs of students, employers and professional bodies in the regional economy. 
The course offers breadth and specialisation in various aspects of computing and systems development. It includes core units such as Business Skills for e-Commerce, Computer Systems, Employability and Professional Development and Project Design, Implementation and Evaluation together with specialist units which include Programming in Java, Object Oriented Programming, Programming .NET, Data Structures and Algorithms, Database Analysis and Design and Systems Analysis. 
A unit of Work Based Experience is also included.

EDEXCEL BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Graphic Design (QCF)

Graphic design is the art of communicating messages, concepts and ideas using text and images, both on screen and in print. The results of the graphic design process can be seen in websites, magazines, DVDs and CDs, video games, film credits, books,posters and flyers - anywhere that text and images appear together.
 A graphic designer's job involves producing exciting, engaging design products that will inform/entertain the target audience and will also satisfy the requirements and agenda of the client. This course aims to deliver foundation graphic design skills, and explore issues such as how to get great ideas, how to develop layouts, how to produce professional standard designs using Apple computers and how to present design work at a professional level.

EDEXCEL BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT is a nationally recognised vocationally specific qualification to enable progression to higher education qualifications. The course has been developed in the areas of Computing and IT Systems and focuses on education and training for future IT specialists who wish to be employed in a variety of types of computing and technical work, such as programming, technical support, network support, assistant IT technician, trainee IT technician, trainee helpdesk technician, analysis & design and web site development etc. 

The course will be delivered in a modular format within two semesters per year. The course consists of a number of units covering the areas of: Website development; Computer Operating Systems and Hardware; Computer Graphics and Animation; Programming in a variety of languages; Troubleshooting, Computer Networks, Business Systems, Systems Life Cycle.
